The city’s Chinese Cultural Centre draws in hundreds for its annual festivities
Hundreds of people gathered into Chinatown to celebrate the first month of the 4714th Chinese year. The main attraction: the dragon dance at the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centre.
Inside, the chatter of the crowd, the cries from the vendors, and beating Chinese drums float up to the high-cast ceiling modeled after Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. The festivities include face painting, live music, and martial arts demonstrations among food vendors.
The spectators then flooded onto the patio when the dragon dance commenced. Among the crowd were VIP guests, including a handful of politicians such as Canadian Liberal MP Kent Hehr, Conservative MP Sandy Jensen, and Calgary City Councillor of Ward 4 Sean Chu.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly spelled Kent Hehr's name. The Calgary Journal regrets the error.
